Renal Cortex — Outer layer containing the glomeruli and proximal/distal convoluted tubules; primary site of blood filtration producing approximately 180 L of filtrate per day
Renal Medulla — Inner region containing the loops of Henle and collecting ducts organized into renal pyramids; concentrates urine through countercurrent exchange
Renal Pelvis — Funnel-shaped collecting basin formed by the major and minor calyces; urine drains from the pyramids into the pelvis and then into the ureter
